Methadone and Pregnancy

If you are a woman addicted to heroin or some other narcotic, your menstrual periods have probably stopped and you are not able to get pregnant. However, once you enter methadone treatment, your health will most likely improve and you will be able to get pregnant – which means that you will need to use birth control, because methadone can affect the health of an unborn child.

Get help today
If you are using drugs, are already pregnant, and are not under a doctor’s care, you need to 866.575.8187 for immediate help. The sooner you get medical care and treatment, the better are the chances for you and your baby.

Without medical help, more than half of all babies who are born to heroin-addicted mothers die during pregnancy or shortly after birth. If they survive, they usually have developmental problems that affect their physical and mental growth.

Taking narcotics such as heroin and OxyContin during the first three months of pregnancy is very dangerous to your child. These drugs cause birth defects and abnormal development.

Methadone and your baby
If a pregnant woman stops taking drugs too suddenly, it may cause her unborn baby to die. The reason for this result is that the baby becomes hyperactive without drugs, and then cannot get enough oxygen to survive.

If you are in the first three months of pregnancy, even methadone can harm your baby, so you will have to work with your doctor to decide what is best.

If you are past the first three months, your doctor will probably switch you from heroin to methadone. Although methadone is not completely safe for unborn children, it is not as harmful as heroin and some other drugs.

Even with methadone treatment, your baby will experience unpleasant withdrawal symptoms after birth, sometimes lasting for months. Doctors often give these babies low doses of methadone or other medications to make them feel better. Then they gradually lower the baby’s dosage until the baby is completely drug-free.

If you are pregnant and are using any opiate drugs, please call 866.575.8187 today.
